Sacrifice

Ravana was a worker that works in the tea plantation. He had been working there after Sri Lanka gained their independence from the British in 1948. He was a Tamil that once work for the government when the British were still around. Back then, the British favored the Tamils and many of them worked in the government. Once the British left, the Sinhalese took over the country and Ravana was retrenched just because he could not speak Sinhala. That was not the only case, many of the Tamils become stateless as citizenship rights were not given to those whose forefathers were not born in Sri Lanka. The Ceylon Citizenship was not very fair to Ravana as his forefathers were not born in Sri Lanka. Some of the Tamils once work hard for the country but this is what they get back in return. They did not even have the rights to vote for government they want.

In 1950, Ravana was forced to move to another small part of the country with all the Tamils. The Sinhalese had gone overboard and had occupied the land that was once owned by the Tamils. The despaired Tamils had to move to another place of the country. Ravana and the rest were very enraged as they were treated like they do not belong to the country. Many Tamils were impecunious and did not have the money to even eat 3 meals a day. Some of the children even had to work in order to help support their family. Ravana continued to work as a worker in the tea plantation when they moved to their new place. After a long day of tiring work under the burning sun, Ravana returned home and his brother complained to him.

“Is this how they treat us when we had contribute so much to the country?” Kumaratunga complained.

Ravana said in a depressed tone “Do we even have the power to oppose the government?”

Kumaratunga thought for a while and answered “Ravana, we have the power if we build an army and recruit people who hates the government.”

“But what happens to our family members? They will get in danger too!” Ravana exclaimed.

“There is no time to consider either we fight or our lives will be like hell!” Kumaratunga shouted.

“I discourage you on doing that Kumaratunga, we will talk about this later in the future. Ravana murmured in a soft tone.

6 years later, a new act was introduced the Official Language Act. Schools and places which Sinhalese populates are to use Sinhala as their language. Many Tamils thinks this act is racist and they began protesting on the street. The Sinhalese army was brought in to stop the Protestants from their foolish act. The Tamils were fuming and the started fighting with the Sinhalese army. After the violent conflict, bodies of dead Tamils and Sinhalese were found on the street. That street became a bloody street from the bodies of the deceased.

Before 1970s, the university admission was fair to both Sinhalese and Tamils. Most Tamils scored well and went to the top courses in university. The Sinhalese government was not really happy with the results. And in 1972, the government changes the university admission that gave the Sinhalese advantage. The Sinhalese had to score a lower mark to enter the popular courses while the Tamils had to score higher than before to go in the popular course. Many Tamils in the end went to those courses that no one would want to go to. Now the Tamils had really been push to the limit.

In 1976, Kumaratunga and Ravana had decided to form this army in order not to be pushed by the Sinhalese again. They took years to build this army and bought ammo to fight for their independence. The army was called the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). They started to bomb the city where Sinhalese populates and had more conflict with the Sinhalese army. The Sinhalese also were not so easy bullied. They fight back with the Tamil Tigers with all they got. Many of the Tigers were caught unaware and were killed or taken back to torture to say out their leader name. Ravana the leader of the Tigers were worried that they were going to be wipe out.

After days of non-stop gunshots in Sri Lanka, there was only Ravana left from the Tigers. He was seriously injured after the last attempt of protesting from the Sinhalese. He was shot in the left arm and need treatment immediately or he would be dead. He became a fugitive and the cops are frantically searching for him. Will he survive and escape from the cops or will he be caught by the cops and punished severely?
